How to wear: pleated leather skirt

After weeks of searching I found her.  The one I have been looking for.  The perfect length, the perfect fullness, the perfect everything... my pleated leather skirt (shop her here).  I saw her hanging there, shining in all her glory, in the window at the ever so addicting clothing boutique THREAD (one of the many gems of the Columbus fashion scene). I knew she had to be mine.

This is one of those items people buy because it's so beautiful but get so excited to have it that they don't really think about what they can style it with. Well, let me tell you... there are so many options. so many. I love it so much I have thought of ways I could style it as pajamas so I wouldn't have to take it off at the end of the day (kidding, but seriously).

This piece is incredibly versatile. Like leather pants, the pleated skirt can be dressed up or down.  You can wear it with a sleeveless lace top and cropped jacket or a plaid button up.  I kept it simple with a silk vince blouse (similar here), jimmy choo booties, and a vintage gucci cross body bag (straight out of grandmas closet). I topped the look off with minimal accessories to keep the focus on the skirt.

The black and silver david yurman necklace is color friends with the booties, while the peacock cuff pulls in the navy and oxblood to complete the look -the rich colors make a statement while still complimenting one another.

seriously... this is one of those items that will call to you each time you shuffle through your closet- leather isn't going anywhere and skirts have been around since clothing existed so, once again, justified! (warning: this is a dangerous thought process and can lead to eating ramen noodles so you can afford to shop)

Fall favorites

yagal azrouel jacket // leather skirt (must have version here & at THREAD) // equipment mixed print blouse // cashmere fringe sweater // rag & bone checked pant (similar here) // emerald croc celine bag // Fur scarf (similar here) // eugenia kim fedora (similar here) // pollini booties // Kelly wearstler necklace

So obviously I have expressed my excitement for fall.. Blah blah blah, every single blog you read talks about how fall is their favorite season of fashion and what not because of the layers and boots and whatever else you put on your body.

My love for fall fashion is, yes, all the reasons above- but so much more.  There is no other time where you can take items from every single other season and combine them to make a complete look.  The wardrobing options are endless and every texture and print you can imagine can be put together to create a look that cannot be copied.  Fall is a time to express true originality of style by using our most amazing resource; fashion.

All of these items make my heart sink, and I can immediately think of things that each of them can be paired with in my closet.  It's not always about buying a fantastic piece that can stand alone (although this is totally acceptable within reason), but that can be complimented by other things to create more than just one look.

So enough of this fashion preaching... Check out these must have staple pieces that are guaranteed to add a little fall sparkle to your closet.

oh and also, GO BUCKS!

Outfit of the week: Emerald + Leopard

I couldn't help but  make the outfit of the week fall inspired.  The air is getting chilly, football is happening in a big way, my hair now matches the leaves & my pants are getting a little tighter- (it's a welcomed problem- i'm a comfort food girl, what can i say!)

This color combo has my complete attention.  The richness of the emerald sweater and plum denim combined with leopard and neutral patent leather (belt shoes), is so yum I can hardly stand it.

I embellished the look with a blue stone necklace from Pluma Jewelry for another pop of color, but kept it simple with a gold michael kors pave diamond watch.  The black fringe backpack keeps the look boho chic and casual.

What I love most about this look is the versatility.  A simple look that can turn sassy with one additon: A silk leopard bomber jacket (must have from equipment).

This sweater can take me on a casual date with my fashionmista or out with the girls (see below).

hudson jean jacket // torn skirt (similar here) // Leopard belt // Bib necklace (similar here)

I kept the leopard consistent in this outfit wth a belt and added some texture with the striped skirt.  The addition of the bib necklace makes this outfit stand out in the crowd. I threw over a jean jacket to keep the look away from going 'business' with the pencil skirt.  Voila- emerald sweater = fall staple piece (I can justify anything...)

Stay tuned for my favorite fall finds on friday

How to Wear: Mixed Prints

Oh you fancy, huh?

twist & tango shirt // bluelab reversible pant //  feather scarf (similar here) // vest (similar here) // belt (similar here)// chanel flats // Made in the deep south bracelet (can be purchased at local boutique, THREAD) // Floyd Clutch (can be purchased at local boutique, Rowe)

Mixing prints can be a bold fashion move to attempt.  There are defiantly varying levels of mixing prints-  It can be as low key as a striped shirt paired with a lace skirt or as cray-cray as a metallic snakeskin peplum top mixed with a zebra printed pant.

this outfit is a fairly subtle way to get the look without getting too aggressive. I mixed a soft striped henley tee with a pair of light grey leopard pants as a base.  The two pieces are both neutrals so they blend well together.  I added the flowy black vest and a tan calfskin belt to break up the two prints and a little extra somethin somethin.  I topped the look with a feather printed scarf that ties in all the colors of the outfit and makes it look cohesive.

The neutral shoe, leather clutch and leather cuff are embellishments that pull the look together to make it head to toe complete and wearable.

When mixing prints & patterns:
1. One of the prints needs to be on a smaller scale than the other- or else the look will be too busy
2. Back to basic color knowledge of complimentary colors- stay within the same color family when mixing and matching- it's easier on the eye.
3. space the patterns out.  Don't be afraid to get a little funky with your mix and match but a belt or solid vest can break the pattern up and de clutter the clashing prints.

fridayFINDS: Cravin' Cobalt

three floor dress // chloe amelia bag // golden goose boots //  leather vest (similar here) // journelle lingerie (get it here) // alexandra mcqueen bangle -- any skeletons in your closet?

As I was styling a client last night for a dinner party I couldn't help but notice all of the fantastic black staple pieces she had in her closet.  You can never go wrong with those items that you find yourself gravitating towards time after time.

She wanted to wear one of her black blazers- and I agreed because it was legit made for her (like the twerk was made for Miley).. destiny, right?

Anyways, I didn't want her to be just another pretty girl wearing an outfit in a sea full of other pretty girls wearing whatever-- I wanted her to look like the bad a** fancy pants she is.

what a BETTY, right?!

After styling her outfit last night I was inspired to do a post about black & cobalt.  Always a classic look but with just enough edge.  When styling with these two colors:

1.keep it simple
2.don't try to hard (people can tell.. it's aggressive and doesn't photograph well)
3.drink champagne (do this step when styling with any color combo)

Day in to Night out

Okay, so you know those days when your standing in your closet and you want to be comfy cas but you want to rock your new heels- so you feel conflicted and then get hot flashes and have a miniature panic attack because all of a sudden everything you wanted to wear turns into nothing to wear?
Yeah.. well that literally happens to me on the daily. Ask my fashionmista, there are days when I literally think my closet panic attacks make him want to strangle me... but its fine, because that's just our nature girlfriends.
So today... I'm standing there.. well looking down (i'm currently living out of a suitcase right now at my sisters house in Dallas) and I know I have to work for a few hours on a closet- so I want to be comfy cas- but then after, I have a blogger meeting and then a cocktail party at neimans- aka zero time to go back home to change before the evening events. [here is where panic instills] -
I took a deep breath and went for a little remix action.  Casual but cute shirt from sundry, my distressed hudson (which can always take you from day to night) and a pair of killer but comfortable heels (kept it neutral for the blazer that I will add for tonights soiree).  I loaded on the jewels- per usual, wrapped an hermes belt around my waist (for an extra glam touch), grabbed my gucci tote that has my entire life in it- and headed out.
moral of the story- never be afraid to mix day and night- and NEVER forget the jewelry.

Feather frenzy

Ok so some of you may recall from my 'who is this broad? about me- that I seriously covet feathers.  I have not met a feather I didn't like.

I even have a feather tatted on my body- thats real serious love. Everyone is always like 'oh what does your feather tat represent'? At first I lied and said it was because of my native american background (which is like 1/24th.. cant even get into college with that number)- for some reason I thought that sounded like really cool and meaningful.  what? ok.  then I was all like it's just because I love feathers.

Feathers have always been in the fashion game in one sense or another.  Haute Hippie did a tee a few years back that started a bit of a "graphic tee" feather look, and almost every high-end designer I can think of came out with a feather clutch or flirty skirt.  You can image my excitement when feathers, once again, dawned the runway at NY fashion week for the upcoming season.

Jason Wu did a YUMMY full feather frock that I would DIE for (hello wedding reception dress)

Erdem did a monochrome feather dress with a full on feather peter pan collar

Need I say more?

on another note i'm doing the gem cleanse- yes it comes in a bud light case which is the only reason I may get through it.

Place & Event #trendingtowardsparis

There is not an occasion in the world that doesn't require an appropriate outfit.  Whether it be dinner with the girls, date night, running errands or even working out (for all you lulu lovers out there).  There is no better place to find outfit inspiration than strolling down the streets of bastille.  Small cafes, charming shops & nook and cranny gardens.
It was in Paris while studying trend forecasting and fashion journalism that I learned the importance of the 'right outfit'.  LBH although those lucite loubs looks killer on date night, they will not fly while walking on the cobble stone streets of old pari.
I pulled together a handful of must have items when brunching and strolling in paris (or anywhere else that you brunch and stroll).  The key here is layers, functional yet fabulous shoes, and a backpack purse.  #trendtowardsparis
Ray ban geek chic specs // Phillip Lim trench // Steven flats // Alexis bittar necklace // Sass & Bide denim // Opening ceremony sweater // backpack

The outfit behind the logo

trendEDITOR is all about helping woman and men look and feel like a super chic fashionistas and fashionmistas (yes, the man friend version of fashionista in now fashionmista... take notes) As my styling and wardrobing consulting business continues to grow it was only necessary to create a logo that was a head to toe illustration of, well, myself... selfish? maybe. But nonetheless I want my readers and clients to know that what you wear should be a reflection of how you feel- which should always be confidant and fabulous
The outfit that I am wearing is one of those outfits that I feel so fantastic in- it fits my lifestyle, figure, personality and style. I was so lucky to have a very talented friend, Alison Rose, to take this outfit and create a logo that embodies it all- boho statement (tailored boho chic and statement jewels).
oh and BTW- this is my fashionmista

When in doubt- buy the jewelry

I must admit- although I fall weak at the knees for so many facets of fashion- jewels trump all other obsessions. There is not a handbag in the world that can fill the void of wanting a new Hermes bracelet. Yesterday as I was shopping at Elements in Dallas I found that perfect piece to add to my always growing stacker collection- a lele sadoughi emerald cube column bracelet.. Yum. I truly believe each piece of jewelry worth having is well thought out by the designer  and is always worth the splurge.
